I would like the logo to:
- appeal to children
- convey change/growth/metamorphosis
- be textural eg use watercolours or pastels or other
- have freedom to be shaped out of the standard box - to be a little bit different
- to work as part of the full formal title, the acronym and as a stand alone logo

One idea is to make the initials A L O T as caterpillars, with the remain letters to be in typeface font. The logo could be a free form butterfly whose body is made up from the initial "A", see attachment below (do not necessarily need to include the outer edge, so it presents a subtle visual perceptual challenge).
Logo to work well when in black & white, as well as in colour. Thoughts regarding colours - either soft, gentle , pastel colours with the butterfly left wing fairly monochromatic with the right wing in the light with change in hue or a complimentary colour from the colour wheel (aim to see change in light of depth, variability, complexity to represent the skill development/progression)
bold primary colours red green blue.
