We're looking to launch a new infographic series entitled "Funders for LGBTQ Issues - Philanthropy Outlook" - with the "out" referencing the LGBT nature of the information contained. This infographic will need to be designed to for the web and to be printed. As such, its dimensions should be such that most printers could easily print it (i.e. 8.5" x 22"). We're looking for this to be creative and fun but professional at the same time. While some of the statistics we're looking to highlight are dire, we don't want this piece to be overly depressing and leave one with a sense of hopelessness. If your work is awesome and what we're looking for, hopefully you'd be open to collaborating on at least two more infographics this year and potentially the same number of infographics, if not more, in 2015. We'd love to find a great infographic designer and supply them with constant work.

NOTE: You do not need to utilize all the text here, just visualize the data for us ... make our story come alive with images so we don't need text ... that would be ideal) Funders for LGBTQ Issues – Philanthropy OUTlook “Gay, Bisexual and Trans Men and Boys of Color” The Need: • Nearly one in five African American male same-sex couples are living in poverty – more than double the poverty rate for African American heterosexual couples and more than six times the poverty rate for white male same-sex couples. (some visualization of the above text and the following figures: Heterosexual married couple poverty rate = 5.7%; African American male same-sex couple poverty rate = 18.8%; White male same-sex poverty rate = 3.1%) • Gay, bisexual, and transgender young men and boys are as much as 50 percent more likely than their heterosexual peers to be stopped by the police. • While gay and transgender youth represent between 5 and 7 percent of the nation’s youth, they account for 15 percent of youth in the juvenile justice system. More than 60 percent of these LGBT youth are of color, and the majority are boys or young men. • Black and Latino gay and bisexual men account for more than a third of new HIV infections--the greatest share of which occur among young men and boys aged 13 to 34. In Atlanta, a sample of young Black gay men was shown to have an annual HIV infection rate of 12%, meaning that a young Black gay man becoming sexually active at the age of 18 has a 60% chance of being HIV positive by the age of 30. (36% of new HIV infections) The Funding: • Between 2011 and 2012, LGBTQ funding for MBOC targeted the following racial groups according: (visual: African American = $2,234,184 / 41%; Asian American and Pacific Islander - $552,000 / 10%; Latino = $603,000 / 11%; Native American = $20,206 / 0%; General POC = $2,019,213 / 37% - Total = $ 5,428,603) • During this period, over two thirds of LGBTQ funding for MBOC went towards HIV/AIDS. (visual – 69% HIV/AIDS; 16% Other Health Issues; 10% Labor/Employment; 5% All Other Issues) • The top 10 funders of LGBTQ MBOC (2011-2012) include: 1. Elton John AIDS Foundation ($1,093,950) 2. The Paul Rapoport Foundation, ($1,076,800) 3. AIDS United (formerly National AIDS Fund) ($1,050,895) 4. Ford Foundation ($799,000) 5. M.A.C. AIDS Fund ($260,000) 6. Levi Strauss & Co/Foundation($183,000) 7. Healthcare Foundation of NJ($150,000) 8. California Endowment($137,518) 9. San Francisco Film Society($123,000) 10. Washington AIDS Partnership($121,000) Current Assets: Despite these challenges, gay, bisexual, transgender, and gender-nonconforming men and boys have demonstrated tremendous resilience in the face of adversity, exceptional creativity, and the courage to come together and advocate for social change. (Maybe this can be in a fun mixed-up font that emphasizes the underlined words.) Arts, Culture, & Creativity The arts are a unique tool for bringing people together while drawing on cultural traditions and creating new forms of self-expression. The Bronx Academy of Arts & Dance (BAAD!) is a LGBTQ cultural center based in the South Bronx. BAAD creates and presents contemporary dance productions, theatrical performances, film screenings, and poetry readings such as the annual BlakTino Performance Series and Los Nutcrackers: A Christmas Carajo, all drawing on Latino, Black, and queer cultures to build and empower community through the power of the arts. http://baadbronx.org/ Economic Opportunity There is tremendous untapped potential for the development of targeted programs to increase economic opportunity among gay, bisexual, transgender, and gender-nonconforming men of color. One new innovative example in this area isMany Faces. One Dream, a partnership of the National Black Justice Coalition and the U.S. Small Business Administration. The program is providing training for LGBT entrepreneurs of color in 13 U.S. cities to help them start up or expand small businesses. http://manyfacesonedream.com/ Health & Wellness Clinics, AIDS service organizations, and health centers across the country are working to advance the health and wellness of GBT men and boys of color—often through a framework of empowerment and social justice. The Asian & Pacific Islander Wellness Center in San Francisco, for example, provides free medical care, HIV counseling and testing, and behavioral health services—all offered regardless of insurance status and with an exceptional level cultural competence, by staff who speak Cantonese, Hawaiian, Hindi, Ilokano, Japanese, Malay, Mandarin, Tagalog, Vietnamese and Visayan. http://www.apiwellness.org/ Youth Organizing Gay, bisexual, and transgender young men and boys are organizing with other youth in bold, intersectional ways around issues ranging from immigration reform and criminalization to same-sex marriage and economic justice. Among many examples, the youth of BreakOUT! are working to end the criminalization of LGBTQ youth and build a safer and more just New Orleans. After only two years of existence, BreakOUT! has already won a major victory by securing the adoption of New Orleans Police Department Policy 402, which prohibits profiling on the basis of gender expression, gender identity, or sexual orientation. http://www.youthbreakout.org/ Definition Bar: Gender Expression: How a person represents or expresses one’s gender identity to others, often through behavior, clothing, hairstyles, voice or body characteristics. Gender Identity: An individual’s internal sense of being male, female, or something else. Since gender identity is internal, one’s gender identity is not necessarily visible to others. Gender Non-conforming: A term for individuals whose gender expression is different from societal expectations related to gender. LGBTQ: Common acronym for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer people that, despite their differences, are often discriminated against in similar ways. Sometimes written only as LGBT, the “Q” is included to indicate either Questioning and/or Queer. An “I” is also sometimes added for intersex as is an “A” for ally. LGBT may also be written as GLBT. MBOC: Common acronym for Men and Boys of Color. Transgender: A term for people whose gender identity, expression or behavior is different from those typically associated with their assigned sex at birth. Transgender is a broad term and is good for non-transgender people to use. “Trans” is shorthand for “transgender.” (Note: Transgender is correctly used as an adjective, not a noun, thus “transgender people” is appropriate but “transgenders” is often viewed as disrespectful.) The infographic must include our logo - and the logo must be unaltered. We'd love to have this infographic feature a clearly branded - "Funders for LGBTQ Issues - Philanthropy Outlook" which we can also feature on future infographics of this series. An outline of the infographic is attached as a document. Ideally the main focus would be on the "needs" and "funding" sections. The "assets" section is mostly text and should be considerably smaller (i.e. the first two sections take up 75% of the infographic whereas the assets and everything else takes up less than 25%). The "Definition bar" can just be a bar somewhere. The "Sources" and "Credits" can be tiny on the bottom - just barely readable. As much as possible, we'd love to see the information displayed visually, but we also have scripted text that can be included. This should be a culturally competent piece, so please avoid any overly stereotyped imagery - including rainbows.
