I need a book cover designed for an urban fantasy novel. I am self-publishing through Createspace and need a cover that will look good on both the physical book as well as the thumbnail view and all views in between. I need a front and back cover (and spine) and a space left open in the back for the ISBN and barcode.
The story is a dual-world story. Here's some of blurb I wrote for a query letter:
To keep her safe, privileged Hazel Michelli's parents never told her she was adopted. She found out the truth when the danger her parents feared ripped apart the front door of her Denver penthouse and stole her away to the Realm, an alternative land where magic and monsters exist.
Hazel escapes back to Colorado with the help of a friendly Firecat, but not before she has a terrifying family reunion with her sadistic birth father, Lucian. She learns Lucian must sacrifice a daughter to maintain immortality. When his planned sacrifice--Hazel's half-sister Meara--went missing, he sent his minion to find her and got lucky when he found Hazel instead. With her blood Lucian can not only maintain his immortality, but can obtain unlimited power to take over the Realm. Hazel races between both worlds (the Realm and Colorado), searching for the little girl while attempting to stay one step ahead of Lucian. Their lives, and the future of the Realm, leave her no room for failure.
Arden is the love interest and looks like Liam Neeson in Rob Roy. Hazel has dark hair and brown eyes and is about 24-26 yrs old. The Firecat looks like a house cat with unusual amber fur, and can ignite itself on fire when needed.
Significant images/scenes include Rosen Manor which is designed off of a medieval castle. The Realm where much of the story takes place is like the Redwood Forest. There is a costume ball where the masks are fashioned after animals - Arden's is a stag. Hazel's dress is plum and she has a peacock feather mask that is on a stick. (Think Labyrinth) I've seen several books lately that have masks on them, so I don't know if that would be the best direction to go, but I'm open to the idea. :)
Because the title is so fantasy, I need the cover to include a reference to the urban part of the fantasy. The way they cross from one land to the other is through a portal - which is two stone pillars set apart the width of a doorway. When the spell is cast, fiery writing burns into the pillars.
Hazel uses a lot of magic where she controls the air. It's her primary defense. Another magic that is referenced in the story is a blue flame that the magicians can hold in their hands, that gives off a blue glow.
Is this too much info? I don't have a specific cover in mind, so you can feel free to be creative with any of the images I listed. I tend to like simpler better than too many images on a cover. The title is Finding Meara and then the series title is An Adven Realm Adventure Vol. 1.
I have a board in Pinterest that has images related to my story, titled Finding Meara. http://pinterest.com/lschiffbauer/finding-meara/
