Qui sommes-nous ?
Welcome to the new novel by Aaron Aalborg: They Deserved It – A novel of lust and revenge spanning the centuries My novel, They Deserved It, is a fascinating, dynamic, fast paced book in need of a cover that matches that dynamism. The cover will brand both the eBook and the trade paperback edition. The cover we create needs to convey, not the story itself, but what the book is about from the perspective of theme and mood. We need to create a book cover that argues persuasively that this is a book the perspective book buyer needs to read. Get ready, I am about to deliver a full on brain dump. I’ll just go ahead and apologize for that now. I’ll probably give you entirely too much of what you don’t want and not enough of what you do need. If that’s the case, contact me so I can (hopefully) clear up any confusion. Okay, buckle up. It might be a bumpy ride. The Reader: (See Notes section below for back cover blurb) Our target reader is someone for whom the following tags would spark an interest: Genres - Literary Fiction, Mystery/Crime, Suspense/Thriller, Action/Adventure, Romance Tags - poison, witchcraft, the inquisition, torture, historical novel, conspiracy, witch trials, witch burnings, good vs. evil, Papacy, cardinals, lust, murder, the rise of china, China fighting the US, lesbian, feminism, feminist, gay, women’s liberation, gender equality, societal strictures, murder mystery, Italy, Rome, Milan, Naples. They Deserved It will be released as a Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP) eBook and a CreateSpace (CS) POD trade paperback. Publication is scheduled for early February 2013. The manuscript is complete at 63,327 words filling 151 pages. Ideally, the KDP and CS covers would be the same. A spine and back cover will be required for the print edition. CS Specifications: Cover – 5.5” x 8” Text and images must be at least .125” inside the trim lines to ensure that no live elements are cut during the bookmaking process. The following information must appear on the cover – They Deserved It – a novel of lust and revenge spanning the centuries by Aaron Aalborg Images Images may be CMYK or RGB color. I’m sure that means a great deal to you. Aside from the shocking shortage of vowels, it means nothing to me. All images should be sized at 100%, flattened to one layer and placed in the document at a minimum resolution of 300 DPI. The spine of the book: Please allow for 0.0625” variance on either side of the fold lines for your cover. For example, if your spine width is 1”, your text should be no wider than 0.875”. Because of this variance, avoid hard edges or lines that end on the fold line. Barcode Space must be allowed for an ISBN barcode – a 2" by 1.2" white box in the lower right-hand corner of the book's back cover. Images or text in the barcode location will be covered when the book is printed. Make sure no important elements appear where the barcode will be placed. CS has templates that show the exact placement. Detailed information regarding cover art and dimension specifications is available at Amazon’s CreateSpace KDP Catalogue/Cover Image Specifications: Requirements for the size of the cover art have, according to KDP, an ideal height/width ration of 1.6, 1,563 pixels on the shortest side and 2,500 pixels on the longest side. JPEG or TIFF Color Product images display on the Amazon website using RGB color mode. Please, use color images whenever possible and relevant. The Kindle reading device has a black and white screen, but other applications display in color. Borders for White Cover Art I am told cover art with white or very light backgrounds can seem to disappear against the white background. KDP’s best advice is that adding a narrow (3-4 pixel) border in medium gray will define the boundaries of the cover. Detailed information of catalogue and cover designs is available at Amazon’s Kindle Direct Publishing. All files and images necessary for upload the cover to Amazon are, of course, required.

Back cover blurb: This thriller begins as a historical novel set in 17th Century Italy, a time of superstition, plagues and cynical exploitation of young women. It is a ripping yarn of illicit love, hundreds of poisonings, the Inquisition, torture and witch burnings, built around true events. The characters include: beautiful young girls oppressed by dynastic marriages to aged husbands; a tormented young priest; Machiavellian cardinals and a scheming, atheist pope. In the second part of the story, the decedents of some of the characters in the first section of the book are driven to fulfill their ancestral destiny in modern day New York. The result in grisly killings; global pursuit; international espionage and a thrilling climax of mass murder authorized by the President of the United States. It is up to the reader to decide which of the victims deserved their fate. That’s the blurb, now some details: They Deserved It is a dark work of historical and contemporary literary fiction with the pace and substance of a modern thriller. It deals with the consequences of the foolishness and arrogance of old men and it pulls no punches. The pace is hectic, the scenes are intense, the action is often bloody, violent and at times graphically detailed where it serves the interests of the story. I’m thinking somethin’ like… Listen, you’re the design professional. Being a writer, I simply put words on the page. Still, while writing my books, images have come to mind that allowed me to “see” the work more clearly. Here are some random thoughts, not in any particular order. Some of my “visions” may work, some may not. You tell me. Musings: Pretty, rich girls of 11 to 14 married to old men to unite fortunes. Spain, the pope and independent cities run Italy. Girls and young women, led by a witch, poison their husbands. The characters of the Pope and cardinals are nasty, dark and mean spirited. They conspire to stop the poisonings while advancing their individual agendas. To that end, thirty women are burned, hanged or walled up. Meantime a handsome priest falls in love with one of the young women. Knowing their fate if they stay, the couple flees to New Amsterdam where their descendents repeat the story in modern day New York. Now the murderesses are two stunningly accomplished, intelligent and beautiful lesbians. The story ends with a missile bringing down a Cathay Pacific Airliner. Yeah, I have a pretty crowded brain. Cover design: A writer trying to be a graphic designer; if that isn’t the stuff of terrifying nightmares for designers, I don’t know what is. Here goes. The design might start on the left with a 17th century Italian feel and move into modern New York on the right hand side. I will upload a PDF with images that will give you a feel for the people and the times. Either a Cardinal or the Pope might be looking into the cover image from the left. In keeping with the story, they should look evil, cunning, haughty, cruel and pretty much debauched. From the book, if a young woman is featured on the cover, she should look to be about 18. She falls in love with a priest who is, of course, remarkably good looking. Hey, when you’re eighteen that sort of thing is important! Perhaps for the contemporary side of the cover, lighter colors and skyscrapers in the background. Maybe two women, one blond one redhead. The back cover should probably carry over the theme from the front. It might sound gruesome, but the book and the times it covers were pretty gruesome - maybe a mass hanging or torture chamber on the left melding to the airliner going down on the right. It’s a tall order, but you’re designer type person and so are used to tall orders, right? Well, it gets a bit taller. The cover has to do its job whether it is the actual physical book cover, the Amazon catalogue image or a thumbnail. That’s right – piece of cake! Setting Trends: I am an Indie published author. That said all traditionally published books credit the cover design, both inside, and on the back of the printed cover. Well, why not Indie publishers too? Let’s start a trend. I was thinking something like, “ Cover designed by Ms./Mr. Annoyingly Talented Graphic Artist and Designer of The I Know What I Like Design Studio. For the best in cover art, s/he can be reached at: w w w,IKnowWhatILike,ru Well, like that anyway. We’ll figure out something. Did I forget anything? Of course I did. You're the designer, so work your particular kind of magic and let me know if you need anything. I'll just wait over here, okay? Good luck to both of us. Chris
