Qui sommes-nous ?
Quelles sont vos idées ?
Hello! My name is Mike Palmer and I’ve just written my second novel. I need a cover design for it and I’m hoping someone can help me with this. Here are my design ideas (with respect to my 2 attachments) that follow a simple but abstract look... and I'm flexible with your ideas too: 1. I’d like the overall parts of my bookcover design to generally be in the same areas as I’ve drawn them in the attached – and generally be a black and white contrast (exceptions explained below) 2. In general – the background of my book should be a sharp and vivid white (like the book cover of Moral Relativism by Steven Lukes) 3. Face outline (located at top half of book cover) – I’d like it to be along the lines of the face outline of The Great Gatsby cover (only eyes, eyebrows, lips, and a few strands of hair showing… all in black. And only hair strands on left-hand side of face showing… no hair on right-hand side of book cover) – but more like the facial features of the face on the Memoirs of a Geisha cover (but only a few lines for the hairline). The hair is not so straight – it’s somewhat wavy but there shouldn’t be much lines indicating exactly the hair outline… as well, the eye/eyebrow shape would follow the shape of the eyes, in general, of Memoirs of a Geisha. The lips would follow the lip outline of Kristen Scott Thomas who is on the cover of The English Patient book. And lastly – only the retina of her eyes would show blue (same color blue as Memoirs of a Geisha). Everything else (re: facial outline) would be black 4. For bottom half of book cover – have John-Lennon type mayfair glasses showing (black outline) – the glasses would be shown much like the glasses shown in Moral Relativism by Steven Lukes… but no shadow beneath the glasses and no end pieces should be showing (the pieces that extend back over the ears). There should also be a dent on the top of the right-hand frame of the glasses (just a small one)… the character had an accident and dented his glasses 5. Within the glasses – on the right-hand side lens - a “real” nature shot of an empty wheel-chair, with a blanket on the ground and a book beside the blanket. The book is Ulysses by James Joyce and it would be great if the title Ulysses could be readable (as most of my book ties into many themes within Ulysses). The wheelchair is right beside a river (only a few feet away… the river is probably 50-100 feet wide). It shouldn’t show any person in this picture within the glass lens – as the person in the wheelchair had already rolled into the river and drowned. This lens should be a grey-ish style color (keeping it in a nice contrast with the black and white of the cover) 6. On the left-hand side lens - you could show a faded map of Ireland, England, and a part of Northern France. Because most of the book is about Ireland, I’d like Ireland within this lens to be draped in Ireland’s vivid flag colors (green, white, gold… from left to right). But nothing else is showing colors within this lens. Then, there should be the outline of a WWII plane (Spitfire PR Mk VI) arcing toward the upper area of Northern France (… in the book, the plane crashes in Northern France) with a slim trail of black smoke behind it (it was shot down) 7. Right-hand eye – her right eye would need to be in a puzzle piece (angled at approx.. 45 degrees – per my attached drawing)… so the top right hand corner of the book would be a bunch of puzzle pieces. All the other pieces would just be white (in keeping with the color of the white backdrop of the book cover) but it would show faint edges of the puzzle pieces (shouldn’t show much depth to the puzzle pieces… but a little depth is good). The edging of the puzzle pieces would be slight darker than the white (greyish edging of puzzle pieces). The puzzle pieces at the top right-hand corner of the book would fade into the solid white of the book cover just below the eye-line of the face (and from the centre of the face). I’m not sure how many puzzle pieces I’d need for this section and I don’t know if the puzzle pieces should extend all the way to the right-hand corner of the book… I’m not sure what color should show beneath the puzzle pieces that are broken off… maybe a darker shade of white? 8. The Title and author name – These can follow the same font that was used for words “The English Patient” on The English Patient book cover… and it can be at the bottom of the book cover (beneath the glasses) with a faint black line between the title and my name So in summary – the book cover should follow a black and white contrast except for 3 areas: greyish colors for wheelchair scene in right-hand lens, flags colors on Ireland country in left-hand lens, and the blue in the retina of both eyes. I’m trying for a “less is more” look with minimal objects/color on the cover page. Everything should be vivid in it’s colorations. I’m hoping for an abstract, but simple look. I hope this explains it – if not, let me know and we can chat. Thanks! (email@example.com)

Zarra is the best. She gave me so many creative and original designs to choose from. She also tried out some of my ideas for the book cover. Her work is always beautiful. She works quickly, too. I got my ebook and paperback covers in less than a week. I highly recommend Zarra9. I've worked with her before and I hope to work with her again.
